In
this discussion, educator Tom McIntyre talks about a
particular student name Jacinto. This
special education student had troubles growing up officially living with his
elderly grandmother. With Mr. Tom’s assistance, another side of Jacinto is
presented.
- In a couple of paragraphs, describe Jacinto.
After moving into this permanent care, Jacinto was placed into a special education class room with Mr. Tom McIntyre. The school he attended is considered a sanctuary for students with his disability. They taught the importance of academics and personal hygiene. Although, it was hard for him to grasp initially that someone will care for him. Jacinto had a terrible time being open with people because after a while they would turn their backs to him.
- When Jacinto told his teacher (Tom McIntyre) to "blank" Off - what was the teacher's response?
- What happened to Jacinto?
- Based on what happened to Jacinto, why do you think the teacher, Tom McIntyre, wanted to share this story?
- Describe two of the most important (in your opinion) things you learned by listening to this story.
- Did the community let Jacinto down? Why or why not?
I believe that the community did let Jacinto down. He was raised mostly on the streets, so Jacinto had to act tough to stay alive. While in the foster homes, they should have taught him love and respect even with conduct disorder. Although once he was seen as a threat, he was tossed around over and over again. All Jacinto wanted was to belong somewhere with someone who cared for him as much as he did to them.
