The purpose of education is help people develop socially, emotionally, and academically. Acquiring knowledge helps a person to be aware of skills that they did not know existed. The learning process teaches people to be disciplined and strive to be skilled with knowledge. The education program is reaching out to in attempt to support children their account needs. Education may be an interactive program or children. The educational needs assessments are geared to probe the needs of the students. Academically, students have different levels cognitive development. Students seem to need support from each other. Education programs that include the parents and the child are very interesting. This type of initiative has component in the program provides the family with shared connection through education. Teaching the parents to be better parents and allowing the children to share with their parents though volunteering and family interaction is valuable.
Peer Pressure and Bullying are social factors that are prevalent with at risk adolescent. According to Biglan and Walber (2004), one of the strongest reasons that a youth leave school is because of peer pressure. It is difficult for some teens to be accepted. Some of them try to fit in with their peers. The people at school who use drugs seem to be “cool” and not afraid to try new things. As a student, I have friends who have become addicted to drugs. It is difficult for them to struggle with substance abuse problems. It is truly amazing what young people will do to feel loved and accepted by others. Many aspects they are affected through the culture expectations, society acceptance and family support.
Thompson (2006) states¸ that violence delinquency, gangs and bullying is more prevalent among the poor, many of the adolescents who commit heinous crimes seem to come from a prominent background. Socio economic issues may not be as important as giving a child love, nurturing support and proving them with stability. As humans we all have a desire to be loved and accepted according to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Adolescents have that same desire to belong to a group of people who understand their needs and allow them to be a part of the group.
Thompson (2006) states that school, neighborhoods, and the community help adolescents to locate positive activities to keep them from getting involved with negative activities. Many schools offer clubs, after school activities, enrichment programs and fields trips. Some children will not be able to experience any enjoyable activities due to financial disparities. Being a part of a community that has boys and girls clubs and big sister/ big brother programs give those children and adolescents the opportunity to realize that there are other factors in life, which gives them hope that they may create a better life for themselves. According to Thompson (2006), schools, neighborhoods, and communities come together and create social, emotional and cognitive experiences which develop self –confidence and create a foundation for a value system.
The sense of community is not a favorable experience for many people due to the fact that divisions of by race, class, status, and ethnicity states Thompson (2006). At a young age, people may learn about hate crimes, gang violence, racial supremacy, that will taunt their judgment for the remainder of their lives. Therefore, schools and communities may be a place to provide enrichment in the lives of students.
As a student, I have the opportunity to work in the school system. The school factors that affect adolescent today are that they do not seem to have any tolerance for at risk adolescent. The counselors in the school system are not educated to manage children with mental health problems. The behavior problems in the school systems are managed by in school resource officer, who determines if the child will be suspended of be taught in an alternative learning setting. The school system has decided that children with mental health issues must receive their care from mental health clinic to be allowed to attend classes at their school.
In my community, the factors that affect the at risk adolescents is that there are no programs to keep them occupied. It would be helpful if the adolescents had programs that will help to keep them busy such as Community Theater, or sports related activity. The community does provide after school programs for youth called the Boy’s and Girl’s club, but many of the children can’t afford to pay the fees.
As a student, I believe that through education, the community may have positive outcomes if they create a plan for success. A teacher has the ability to take a group of students and bring together, that they may be able to see the good in each other, which may create a chance for wholeness. It is important for all those who are willing to be proactive to encourage others to do the same. Schools need to be a part of the solution that solidifies teachers, students, parents and other people in a community. The staff at schools have to be vested in the overall destiny of the for the students for generations to come. Schools have outreach programs that may identify and focus on the parts of the community that are viable. A community will remain lively when social beings believe those individuals are good and worthwhile and can be successful.
The purpose of the teacher is providing structure and guidance to the students. The educational board’s members and the schools attempt to create interaction between community factors and the school factors. When they both work together, it produces the growth and development of the students, the family, and the community. In small communities that teachers, students, clergy, city official, store managers, lawyers, and other professional may be familiar with each other by interacting with them at local events. The school system and the community provide the families with resources that may encourage the youth to avoid risk factors by providing them with resources and opportunities to be successful.
Mayberry, Espelage, & Koenig, B. (2009) states that in order to develop intellectually, emotionally, socially, and morally, a child requires participation in progressively more complex reciprocal activity, on a regular basis over an extended period in the child's life. Student learners have the responsibility to retain what their knowledge from their teachers and other influential adults in their lives. The mass media is also and influences the lives of students and they learn from this entity on a daily basis. As a student, I have distraught classmates who are concerned with their friend’s behavior. It is difficult for them to make the connection that our entire lives are affected by all of our daily interactions.
