- Viewpoint: Within in discussion, student were required to read two separate articles by author Alfie Koln. Reading article 5 being that positive words help students. The other was that teachers are not aware that some important factors are to create positive outcomes.

The article 5 reason not to say “Good Job” seemed compelling to read because it common to compliment someone using these encouraging words. It seems that telling a person “Good Job” is a positive communication. It is compelling to read an article which explains how compliments may be harmful if used to often. It has been stated that too much of anything may be detrimental. This article, five reasons to stop saying good job, provides some information that may be helpful to a person who is pursuing a career in education. Good job has a great a phrase that is used by parents, caregivers and teachers. Understanding how to limit this phrase is important to help children with positive develop.

As a student, it seems that education is important to improving our lives. It is has been important for me to receive encouragement when I do well in school. Challenges for children may include being poverty, being abused, and mental health problems. Sometimes it seems that children with challenges need to be encouragement. According to the article telling a child that they are doing a good job may be more harmful that helpful. Children who are praised to often may do anything to be praised, the term praise junkies was created by the author to provide a clear view of the intense desire that children may develop for praise.
A child may learn to be a manipulator because they learn to use those verbal rewards to reinforce negative behavior. It is important to rely on their own ability to decide what is wright and what is wrong. According to the article a child become dependent, on having other people to praise them and start needing that reassurance that they are doing well. The article continues to state that a child who is praised all of the time may not appreciate the encouragement. The ability to gain positive outcomes from a child who has loss the desires to be praised may be difficult. The child doesn’t have the need to get encouragement, so they do not have any reason to follow the directives of

Alfie Kohn’s article, 5 reasons not to say “good job” is an article that seems to express the negative outcomes of over complimenting a child. The author does not discuss the positive effects of encouragement a child. The article seems to compel parents and teachers to avoid telling a child, good job, because it will teach them to manipulate other with words, they will become unable to trust their own options, they may seek praise for everything that they do, or the child may not respond to verbal praise and resist encouragement as a motivational tool. The article is very informative, but only provides a negative view of using the phrase “good job”. In my opinion, it may be important to discuss the positive effects and negative effects of encouraging a child using motivational words.

A child seems to have a need for encouragement and motivation. Using positive words, such as “good job”, may encourage a child when they are completing a task well and let them know if they did something correctly. Saying “good job” may motivate a child to do well, when failure has occurred in the past and express when an adult is proud of the child’s accomplishment.

Youth are exposed to situations that they may not be able to manage. They are combatted with abuse, disappointment, hurt, injustice, and neglect. The youth learn to deal with their problems by observing how adults handle life’s challenges. Many adults do not seem to understand the important of positive encouragement for a child. Children may respond to encouragement from teachers that help them to know when they are behaving appropriately or inappropriately. According to Gordon (2004), Abraham Maslow’s higher achy of needs, states that everyone needs friendship, love, esteem needs, and affection.
It is important for children to receive guidance from their parents and other influential adults in their lives. According to Jung (2010), the social learning theory states that children learn from their parents. The things that a child sees the parent do they assume that it is good and the child will incorporate that into their own life. As a student, it seems that as a child, I grew up with parents who praised me, which taught me to enjoy encouraging other people.

- Why did you select this article to read? In other words, what compelled you to read this article?
The compelling thought of reading this article was the idea of discovering a hidden truth that helps students in the classroom. It seems the article discusses the common misconceptions about teaching any student. It may not be common sense for teachers to realize the students need to feel that someone cares about them and get to know them as an individual. As a student, the classroom setting seems to reflect the teacher. A teacher who is coy and unsympathetic makes it difficult to learn. The classrooms where teachers dedicate their classrooms to a positive learning experience and provide encourage seems to help me to become a better student. The author states that students learn in an environment when they are interested. A student’s excels socially, personally, physically and academically.

The primary view point of the author seems to be that some teachers are not aware of some important factors of creating positive student outcomes. The teacher must be able to convey that she cares about the students as individuals. The class work should not be too difficult for the student, or they will not be successful. A student has to be able to gain success academically, mentally physically emotionally and socially. The students have to be involved in the learning process. If a person enjoys learning they will do better in the classroom. According to Kohn, these are important factors that each person should know to create a learning environment to help students to develop into successful adults.

I am in agreement with the author; students who enjoy learning are more successful. It seems that students who are forced to perform are not success. They may be able to state the facts from materialization, but true learning may not have taken place. The author explains the importance of a caring learning environment. The students who enjoy learning will be successful in the classroom. It is important for teachers to understand that they do not have to make a lesson hard for it to be beneficial to the student. The student has the ability to do well academically, when he has become successful in other area of their education, such as physical, socially and emotional successes. The articles suggest the importance of understanding that a child is not a short adult. The child needs to develop into an adult by learning and experiencing life.
Evaluation Summary
According to the Alfie Khon article Well Duh! 10 obvious truths that we shouldn’t be ignoring, she explains that student learn in a classroom where they are known and cared about. A person who is known is respected for who they are and not required to be anyone else. Many adults seem to believe that children are short adult according to Khon, this is not true. Children will grow up to be adult, but do not have the ability to make the same rationalization as adults at this time.
Learning is an exciting part of life for students. It seems that students learn better when they provide some input about the learning process. Children need opportunities to grow and explore. As children begin to grow they learn to sit still, listen and complete task as directed. A child surpasses developmental stages to become an adult. Children have their own needs and perspectives that will eventually lead them to adult hood, but they need to be given the chance to reach that destination in their own time. Many school express an elaborate plan for outcomes, they are not able to provide. The important factor in any classroom is that the students are learning. The substance of an educational intervention is successful if it provided to help the student to create better grades. The teacher is responsible for creating a learning environment that is helps a child desire to accomplish the goals that have been established in the lesson plan, more than substance over labels.

Students learn when they are allowed to contribute to the learning process, when they fell that they are known by their teacher and they feel the teacher really care about their successes. It seems that some teachers may give work that is difficult to the student, which may cause them to give up because the work is too hard. A student should not be treated as an adult. The student has to be interested in what is happening in the classroom. Once the student is engage, success may be achieved easily. The ability to create positive outcomes in the classroom is not reliant upon labeling the goals. A student who is successful is more important that reaching a specific labeled task that may not be obtainable for the student.

According to Bankert and Kozel (2005), affective teaching means the student is learning. Pacing of instruction, opportunity to learn, expectations of the learning, positive motivation, class room management and time allocation are important for a student to learn. A caring teacher has be identified as the foundation to engage students and create an interest in learning. Children and adolescents do not seem to have the same issues as adults. They seem eager to meet new challenges, genuine to engage in relationships, and they are more honest about how they feel. In classrooms where students believe that someone cares for them, they seem to be happy. Student seems to benefit from specific emotional connections in the classroom. Some teachers seem to be concerned with the importance how other people view their lives, but the main concern is that they are providing what the child needs in the classroom.
Students who are able to have some input on their education may learn to trust in them and believe in their own abilities. According to Li (2015), active listening and creating an opportunity to socialization within the classroom creates an atmosphere of caring within a classroom. Positive educational experience may help adolescents and children to balance their life, to become better adults. Teachers who help children adolescent to think for themselves and problem solve may increase their resilient. Allowing children to develop their own moments of clarity may teach children to take their time and to express themselves.
Summary of Research
Students may have difficulty with teachers who give them assignments that are too difficult, who do not seem to care, and attempt to force them into performing. The students who are in this situation may not be successful. Sometimes the teachers seem to worry about tests and outcomes that they do about the child. According Kohn, the students who are taught by teachers who allow them to develop emotionally, physically, socially and academically produce more successful outcome. School in an adventure where children learn the skills they need to be successful adults. A good classroom environment provides the student with the material that they understand, not just memorialization. Students who are afraid that they can complete their assignments may not have the confidence to talk to the teacher. It is important that the teacher understands that individual student’s personality and intervenes when they are not able to produce positive outcomes. The teacher may benefit from being an advocate for the child who has been entrusted into their care.
